Lost language? Or am I just old?
Rando Rant. Oh, how I long for the good ol’ days of complete sentences and grammar that didn’t require a cheat sheet of acronyms.
I’ve come to realize that I’ve officially reached a point where communicating with my kids feels like I’m learning a whole new language.
I miss the days when a good laugh was just a “haha” or “I’m dying” instead of my 19-year-old daughter, whom I was in a recent conversation with casually dropping “LOL”…out loud like it’s straight out of the Webster’s Dictionary. (I checked, it has been an official word since 2011..yep)
It’s as if she’s giving me a heads-up, “Hey, I’m about to laugh,” and I’m just over here like, “Oh, okay, thanks for letting me know." It’s like we’ve evolved from full sentences into an endless stream of initials. (is that evolving though?)🤔
I half expect to hear her say, “BRB, GTG, LMAO,” and then leave the conversation in the middle of a perfectly good sentence.
I don't know how many times lately I have had to ask someone of the younger persuasion what the acronym meant in their message so I could be in on the joke, conversation, etc.
And then it's followed by a lol..like it was supposed to be so obvious to me. (was that lol meant to laugh at me or with me?)🤔
I swear, next thing you know, "LOL" will be an official word in the dictionary. (oh yeah, it is..keep forgetting)🤦🏾♀️ I just can’t decide if I want to believe it, or if I’m in denial about the fact that it already is.
But let's face it, I use lol in my writing…Does that make me lazy or cool? 🤔🤷🏽♀️
Plus, I’m guilty of loving a good emoji every now and then. 😉
Anywho…just me and my rando thoughts...as my daughter would say “TMI!” (also made an official word in 2014…) I clearly have been living under a rock or worse yet, I have too much time on my hands!😅
Just put me away if when I'm in public and in the middle of hearing a funny joke I respond out loud with saying “LOL” instead of just a good old-fashioned hearty laugh.😂
Just saying.🤷🏽♀️LOL
Today an adult of my generation started a message with FWIW. That one took me a minute. (“for what it’s worth”)
It really is rather disruptive to a conversation when you have to go and Google an abbreviation!
I am believing you, and not wanting to believe you, and not willing to go look for myself...LOL and TMI are in the dictionary for over a decade? OMG!!!
